  • The H. Peter Burg Leadership Connections Series

Leadership goes deeper than an emphasis on techniques to a focus on strengthening character, authenticity, and purpose.  Our particular focus is on values-based leadership and spirituality at work which is different from most other leadership training models.

Most of our programs are conducted over several sessions, giving participants the opportunity, on the job, to reflect on and practice what they learn. A brief overview of our program options follows:

Leadership Development Programs

Leadership, at its foundation, is not so much a set of techniques as it is being true to core values in a way that guides and inspires others to be and do their best.  If you are looking for leadership development that goes deeper than an emphasis on skills only to a focus on strengthening character, authenticity and purpose, Heart to Heart has programs to develop leadership potential at every level in your organization.  The partial listings of programs below can assist you in the ongoing development of people at work, the #1 asset of every successful business:

  • Leading from Within
  • Putting Servant Leadership into Practice
  • Energizing Employee Engagement and Creativity
  • Assisting Others in the Midst of Conflict and Change
  • Leaving a Legacy

Self-Awareness

The focus is on knowing yourself well—having a balanced and honest view of your own personality and an ability to react with others frankly and confidently. If you want your employees to better understand how their mindsets, beliefs, and attitudes influence how positively or negatively they view themselves, others, and their work, the programs listed below will assist people in taking a more positive, proactive, solutions-oriented approach toward workplace concerns:

  • Bringing Your "Whole Self" to Work
  • Fostering Self-Awareness at Work

The Federal Sentencing Commission held a year of hearings and then added one line to the Guidelines stating that public companies “must promote an organizational culture that encourages ethical conduct.” What does ethical culture mean in your company?

  • Strengthening Character and Ethical Commitment
  • Integrating Business Ethics and Spirituality in the Workplace

H. Peter Burg Leadership Connections Series

Prior to his untimely death in 2004, Pete Burg was a tireless supporter of many community and industry organizations.  As Chairman and CEO of FirstEnergy Corp, Pete was recognized as a man of deep integrity who demonstrated great concern for others.  He had the heart of a servant leader.  He looked for, and brought out, the good in others.  It was Pete that invited Heart to Heart Communications to FirstEnergy to do something "not to, but for" his employees.

By his example, he inspired others to give of themselves at work, home, and in the wider community.  This series, named in his memory, provides a monthly opportunity to step back from your daily leadership responsibilities and connect with other leaders to enrich your work and personal life.  In small groups, you can develop in the ways you relate, communicate, lead, work with others, balance your life, and live your values and spirituality.

In 2001, Pete was the keynote speaker for our 8th Annual "Greater Akron Speaks Out for Values" Breakfast.  He ended his remarks with this statement:

"Living and adhering to moral values and decency in the workplace does not require additional skills.  It only requires us to unlock qualities of the spirit that are in all of us - irrespective of race, gender, creed, or origin.  I urge you as you go to your workplace or home to unlock that spirit."

This program is for men and women who want to bring their whole selves to work, including their deepest beliefs and values, their ideas and creativity, their emotions and spirit.  The series begins at different times of the year and may be held in various locations, such as your business setting or other venues convenient for the individual participants.  All sessions are facilitated by a trained professional, one time each month for 90 minutes and are scheduled at a regular time decided upon by you and the other participants.  Each gathering includes a reading assignment, time for reflection, group dialogue, networking among participants, and ways to facilitate your onoing development back on the job.

As in all of our programs, we emphasize the inner development of people -- strengthening the spirit of individuals and organizations.  The value of this program is the opportunity to work in small groups where the sharing of wisdom provides a safe environment for making connections to your values and spirituality in your workplace.

Peter Kostenbaum, in his book, "Leadership:  The Inner Side of Greatness:  A Philosopohy for Leaders" said this about discovering leadership in groups:

"Greatness in leadership, that is, human authenticity, is not only a matter for individuals.  Quite to the contrary, it is best accomplished in groups and leads therefore to in-depth group growth and to team development.  Group and individual growth are systematically interrelated.  People must share with each other their experiences of authentic behavior, their inner struggles, their successes, what makes them proud, their tough decisions, and then support one another in this process of growing as a person and growing as a team."

We have facilitated over 2,000 people, as individuals in small groups outside of work and on-site for small, medium, and large businesses interested in:

  • Recognizing and enhancing  leadership potential and sense of purpose
  • Expanding self-awareness, insight into others, and ability to communicate well
  • Responding more effectively to change
  • Learning what practical action steps need to be taken to be a more authentic, vital and effective leader. Click here (more...)

"When workers instinctively act from their values at work, the work can become more efficient and profound."

--Pat McHenry Sullivan,
San Francisco Chronicle

"I think management is the highest spiritual calling there is. Management and leaders affect a great many lives. They are responsible for creating the kind of environment in which people can flourish or shrink. They have enormous power. They have to deal with terribly difficult issues."

--M. Scott Peck

"The ability to grow as a leader is based on your ability to grow as a person...learn the tools for developing in the ways you relate, communicate, lead, work with others, bring balance your life, and live your spirituality.

"This commitment represents the one time in my 'work month' when I know that slowing down to truly enjoy reflection upon something meaningful and maturing with other leaders is going to occur.  Sharing perspectives on the reading is consistently of interest and serves as a catalyst for additional dialogue amongst enrichment for one another."

W. Riley Lochridge, III, Chairman & CEO, ComDoc, Inc.
